FIP THEMATIC SEMINAR IN SARAGOSSA

On September 16th, the FIP Thematic Philately seminar "How to improve the evaluation of our collections" was held, as part of the events of EXFILNA 2016, which commemorated the 300 years of the Spanish Post.

The lecturers were; José Ramón Moreno, Thematic Juror and " FIP Team Leader", in collaboration with Estanislao Pan de Alfaro, FIP Thematic Juror.

Left: Speakers, Estanislao Pan de Alfaro and José Ramón Moreno. Right: Numerous assistants followed the Seminar with interest

The Seminar was eminently practical, addressing topics such as, “What do I have to do to get my thematic and philatelic knowledge well assessed by the jury?” Or, “which philatelic material to use and which does not”.

There were many aspects to be taken into account by exhibitors and jurors not only useful for Thematic Philately but for all Philatelic Classes. It was also stressed the need to change the attitude of some jurors in the meeting with the exhibitors in front of the frames. Precisely in line with the name given to this meeting in the EXFILNA Program: "Jury Attends the Exhibitors", instead of the usual international exhibitions of "Jury Critique”. It was recalled that "The Boss" is the collector, and as such should be attended to. The jury should strive to weigh the best aspects of the exhibit -  in every exhibit there is something positive - and give their opinion, if asked, on how it could improve the score obtained, with the tone and manners that we would have use with "our boss".

It was a completely open seminar, where the 47 participants were actively involved with their questions and opinions.

Vale Luiz Paulo Rodrigues Cunha (1949-2016)

Luiz Paulo Rodrigues Cunha, FIAF member of FIP Commission Thematic Philately, was born in 1949, sadly died on 10 August , 2016.  As a biologist – he was a post-graduate in Fisheries Oceanography – with both a Master's and Doctor of Sciences in Zoology (Ichthyology).  He worked as a full professor at two public universities in Brazil before retiring and becoming a fulltime philatelist.

His real passion, and he remained very active until his death, was thematic philately.  He mounted his first exhibit Man under Water already about 35 years ago, linked to his job as professor, teaching and researching costal environments.  Also his other exhibits at FIP level are thematic philately exhibits.  He was the first to start an exhibit on his first and last philatelic love: The Wonderful World of Thematic Philately.  And his third thematic exhibit is also in connection with the oceans: Sun, Sea, Surf and Sand – The Discovery of the Beach.

Most of us will remember him in the very active role he played for thematic philately. Since November 2010, he was the editor of a monthly column “Thematic News and Information” on the FIAF website.  He also started to report directly from international FIP exhibitions. But this was not enough, because he had still so much information he wanted to share. He wanted to go even further – until June this year he wrote every week, as Chairman of the FIAF Thematic Commission, seven messages for his thematic philately blog.

As FIP juror in thematic philately, he was active on many exhibitions, national and international.  And if he did not attend an exhibition as juror, then it was as commissioner and/or exhibitor.  He participated about 35 times with his exhibits in shows all over the world.  I remember him from BELGICA 2001 and BELGICA 2006, when I met him personally for the first time and remember him being so happy in explaining me his exhibit on Thematic Philately.

Above all he wanted to spread around the concept of thematic philately.  He was looking for means to help the thematic exhibitors, not only the advanced, but certainly also the beginners.  He not only attended a lot of seminars, but he also gave many lectures and organised seminars of thematic philately himself.

Last year he was one of the very few non-Europeans who visited the ECTP and the seminar of thematic philately in Essen.

ECTP 2015 Thematic Seminar

Furthermore, last year he organised a wonderful seminar with many participants from many different countries in Quito (Ecuador).  And he was already preparing the 3rd FIAF seminar of thematic philately in 2017 in Bogota (Colombia).  Let us all hope that this seminar will be staged, in remembrance of the fantastic work Luiz Paulo has done for thematic philately.  He will live on in our hearts!

After resignation of Jonas Hällström as chairman of the commission (October 2014) according to the FIP Statutes the secretary Koenraad Bracke has been asked to take over as acting chairman until the next FIP Congress (October 2016). As acting secretary until the next congress Peter Suhadolc has been appointed.

 TCNews, TC website and blogs

Since the last activity report only one TCNews has been published (#27 October 2014), the last publication   of former chairman Jonas Hällström (also announcing his resignation).

May 2016 the next issue #28 will be published by the new acting chairman.

The Commission website is updated by co-opted Bureau member Charles Bromser. The website is now sponsored by Mike Rhodes the Australian delegate in the TC. Mike Rhodes also made a road map for improvements to the website, together with acting secretary Peter Suhadolc.

The FIAF representative Luiz Paulo Rodrigues Cunha still published his reports on the FIAF website. This tremendous work even has been renewed at the end of 2014 with a new FIAF Thematic Commission blog (in Spanish). Since then every week 7 new messages have been published on this blog.

According to this good example also the acting chairman started in the beginning of 2015 a Chairman’s blog with news of the thematic philately world (in English).

 Publications

April 2014 was conducted the 3rd International Philatelic Summit in Malmö by Jonas Hällström, past chairman of TC Bureau. In conjunction with this seminar a series of papers Explaining the Philatelic Material has been published. Number 11 by Jonas Hällström is about Thematic Philately. In 2015 he has also been honoured with the publication of his large gold thematic philately exhibit History of Square-Rigged Sailing Vessels in the prestigious Edition d’Or series.

Former secretary of the TC and now FEPA president, José Ramón Moreno, published the book Filatelia Tematica – Análisis e investigacion on different aspects of thematic philately.

TC member Jari Majander from Finland published a richly illustrated handbook of thematic philately (in Finnish): Aihefilatelian käsikirja.

Seminars

A joint FIP seminar thematic philately and postal history has been held on the national exhibition in Torremolinos (Spain) on 28 February 2014 (FEPA president José Ramón Moreno and acting chairman Koenraad Bracke, thematic philately; FIP Bureau member Fernando Aranaz del Rio, postal history).

Chairman Jonas Hällström organised Malmö 3rd International Philatelic Summit (25-27 April 2014).

On the TC meeting on 10 August 2014 in Seoul (Korea) in conjunction with PHILAKOREA 2014 also a FIP seminar was given by Jonas Hällström with the main focus on page sizes in competitive exhibits.

In December 2014 a FIP seminar (thematic philately) was organised at the Malaysia 2014 Specialized Thematic and Youth exhibition (by FIP Bureau member Bernard Jimenez: How to improve a thematic exhibit, the importance of philatelic material).

On 9-10 May 2015 in conjunction with the European Championship of Thematic Philately (ECTP) in Essen (Germany) a FEPA thematic philately seminar was conducted by Damian Läge (also with TC bureau members Koenraad Bracke, Peter Suhadolc and Luiz Paulo Rodrigues Cunha), on different aspects of judging rarity, importance and condition.

On 14 May 2015 a FEPA seminar was organised in conjunction with LONDON 2015 (by FIP Bureau member Bernard Jimenez: How to improve a thematic exhibit, the importance of philatelic material).

In Quito (Ecuador) from 29 September until 2 October 2015 was held the 2nd Congress of Thematic Philately, organised by FIAF Bureau member Luiz Paulo Rodrigues Cunha (also with TC members Ricardo G. Boizard, Koenraad Bracke, David Braun, Damian Läge, Oswaldo Navas Tapia). The seminar was held in conjunction with the 1st Continental FIAF Exhibition of Thematic Philately.

From 16 until 18 October 2015 in Budapest (Hungary) the 3rd International Jury Seminar (about making and judging one frame exhibits) was organised by the Hungarian Federation with FEPA recognition (with FIP team leaders Kurt Kimmel, postal history; Wolf Hess, thematic philately).

TC Bureau matters

 - Secretary Koenraad Bracke and FIP Bureau member Bernard Jimenez met at Philapoitiers (BIRDPEX) in France (1-4 May 2014).

- Chairman Jonas Hällström and Secretary Koenraad Bracke met in Malmö (Sweden) on 29-31 August 2014 in conjunction with Seven Nations Challenge (also with former chairman Damian Läge).

- Acting chairman Koenraad Bracke met resigned chairman Jonas Hällström during NORDIA 2014 in Lillestrřm (Norway) on 22 November 2014.

- Three members of the TC Bureau (Tono Dwi Putranto, Luiz Paulo Rodriguez and Peter Suhadolc) met during Malaysia 2014 exhibition (December 2014).

- Chairman Koenraad Bracke met FIP Bureau member Bernard Jimenez on Phila-France in Macon (25 May 2015).

- A meeting was organised by FIP Bureau on Singapore 2015 exhibition (August 2015) with representatives of the several FIP commissions (with Peter Suhadolc and Tono Dwi Putranto).

- Bureau members Luiz Paulo Rodrigues Cunha and Koenraad Bracke met in Quito (29 September 2015).

- Secretary Peter Suhadolc and Chairman Koenraad Bracke met at Collecta 2016 (26 March) in Ljubljana (Slovenia).

A lot of time and efforts has been put in a question TC acting chairman received in this 2 year period from FIP Bureau: how could Open Philately class be implemented in Thematic Philately FIP Commission. This has been discussed with many leading philatelists of Open and Thematic Philately, but also with several Federations and their representatives. The acting chairman of TC had a meeting in Quito (together with chairman of FIP Youth Commission and Damian Läge, former chairman TC) with FIP Bureau member Prakob Chirakiti to show our concern about this matter and to find solutions which could please as well thematic as open philately world.

Most of the questions that came from TC members and philatelists from all over the world was about philatelic material: could this item be used in a thematic philately exhibit. This shows that philatelists want clear answers on the use of philatelic material in their exhibits.

Program of work for the next two years

We would like to put the emphasis again on our core business which is the promotion of thematic philately:

-          not only by one hour seminars for the happy few, but also with workshops open to as many philatelists as possible and as long as possible (spread over one or more days, as FEPA seminar in Essen and FIAF seminar in Quito).

Many questions of philatelists about philatelic material show that there is still need on the right information:

-          this could be put on the website, with help of all members of TC, who could give information on the material that they know the best – of their own country.

One of our goals is also to improve the website as proposed in a road map prepared by Australian TC member Mike Rhodes and acting secretary Peter Suhadolc: to enrich the website with information about all aspects of thematic philately, not only in English, but also in other languages, so the website could become a portal for thematic philatelists all over the world.

We need to exchange more information between all thematic philately associations, not only on FEPA, FIAF and FIAP level, but also between the different continental federations. Many of these associations still have active organisations and interesting publications.

SUMMIT PAPER RELEASES #9, #10 AND #11

Dear friends of philately

More than one year ago Malmö 3rd International Philatelic Summit was conducted with 92 participants from 20 countries. The seminar content was dealing with the philatelic material in competitive exhibits representing all FIP exhibition classes.

(1) For all exhibition classes the philatelic material is fundamental for the constitution of the exhibit. The limit of the frame space allocated at exhibitions does not allow the exhibitor to display the entire collection.

(2) The exhibitor must select suitable philatelic material which will ensure continuity and understanding of the subject and the concept in the exhibit.

(3) The judges’ evaluation of exhibits will only take into consideration the philatelic material and relevant information presented in the frames, which challenge the exhibitor to only select and display relevant material supporting documentation and text.

(4) The philatelic material displayed should be fully consistent with the subject and show the appreciation of the exhibitor as to what is available. The material should include the fullest range being relevant and of the highest quality available.

Three additional Summit Papers are now released and available on order from Postiljonen AB via their website www.postiljonen.com.

#9 Traditional Philately – Explaining the Philatelic Material by Lars Peter Svendsen FRPSL

#10 Postal History – Explaining the Philatelic Material by Geoffrey Lewis FRPS

#11 Thematic Philately – Explaining the Philatelic Material by Jonas Hällström FRPSL

All three new Summit Papers are introduced in the attached files.

#6 is postponed and will be released later this year.

  Welcome with your orders!

  Best wishes

Jonas Hällström FRPSL,  Malmö 3rd International Philatelic Summit ,  Summit Chairperson

Dear Bureau members,

After a long silence my first message to you, but certainly not the last. After the sudden resignation of Jonas Hällström as Chairman of the Bureau, I needed some time to see how I would go on with the Bureau as the acting chairman until the next FIP Congress.

The last months I have also been very busy with THEMAPHILA 50, the 50th anniversary of Themaphila, the Belgian Association of Thematic Philately. On 11th of April we had a big exhibition in my home town Wetteren. This was already prepared several years ago and the first big event this year of our celebration. We were very happy with the many visitors and the (until now) only positive reactions after the show. It was a regional exhibition all classes and a honour class of 27 Belgian thematic philately exhibits, that not can be shown any more in Belgium because of too high results at (inter)national level.

  • If you have received a gold medal at a certain level in Belgium, you may not compete any more at that level.

  • But even worse – once you have got a vermeil medal at international level (FIP or continental) you may not show your exhibit any more in Belgian regional or national competitions.

First the bad news – as you may have seen the problem with the website is not solved yet, but I have some positive reactions that could get the website online very soon now. And now the good news - what I have tried to do now is some experiments with a blog (similar to the one of Luiz Paulo of the Thematic Philately Commission of FIAF - http://tematicafiaf.blogspot.be). This has not been advertised yet and is still in progress, so I give you here the scope to see how it looks like. If you have any remarks, please feel free to tell. The objective is to give all kind of actual information about stamp shows, thematic philately matters, etc. that I receive from all sources, so also from you as active Bureau members.

So if you have something to tell that could be interesting for the thematic philately world, please send me a message.

Hoping to hear from you soon!

October 2013

Dear thematic philatelists,

It's been a while since the previous NEWSLETTER in July, and I am sorry for that.  As I have been into in the previous NEWSLETTERs, continuation in communication is essential for the best of success with the "Commission's Roadmap 2012-2016".  But, communication is based on interaction and for that I need more reactions and dialogue from you/the delegates and exhibitors.  If we should have a continuous communication I need inputs, reactions and printable material from all of you, otherwise the communication will be a one-way monologue and ends up being on an irregular basis.

 Congratulations to José Ramón Moreno!

This NEWSLETTER was prepared on my way home from the FEPA Congress in Madrid, Spain, where José Ramón Moreno (Spain) yesterday (5 October) was elected new President of FEPA.  José Ramón has a long service in our Commission as the delegate from Spain and he was also in the Bureau for many years.  Now he has a 4 years' term in front of him as the new FEPA President and we all wish him the best of success!

 BRASILIANA 2013

We are now all very much looking forward to the upcoming FIP exhibition in Rio de Janeiro 19-25 November, BRASILIANA 2013.  The Thematic Philately class will be very strong with 87 exhibits/519 frames.  Please find attached an Excel file with the titles and exhibitors.

The Thematic Philately judges at BRASILIANA will be:

  • Team leaders:                           José Ramón Moreno and Jonas Hällström
  • Judges:                                   Francisco Sergio Marinho, Kim Chang Han, Eduardo Jose Oliveira e Sousa, Eliseo Otero, Carlos Eduardo Capucio, Zhang Wei Wei and Wolf Hess.
  • Apprentice:                             Yasuke Naito
  • Cross Apprentice:                     Barak Izhak

As you already know, we have already organised the Thematic Philately activities on the Sunday 24 November:

  • An exhibiting seminar, addressing new and currently active exhibitors. The seminar will be based on the FIP SREV and GUIDELINES for thematic philately.  The aim with the seminar is to establish the mission statement as the Commission has started with by talking about the "generation process" of a thematic philately exhibits and the evaluation of thematic exhibits/how one can improve one's exhibit. The seminar is open for everybody and is a qualifying seminar for FIP juror apprenticeship application.
  • A work shop for qualified judges on international and national level. The aim with the workshop is to establish the new concept as the Commission will adopt for training judges. The workshop will focusing on a limited numbers of judging criteria and work with them "in deep". The workshop is open for qualified judges international, continental and national) only.

In the attached file the exhibition organizer has prepared an official invitation for the activities taking place in Rio.  If you intend to participate, we would like you to fill in the application form. Pre-registration will be needed since the number of places for the workshop will be limited.

 TCNEWS

As you will remember from the previous TCNEWS in April, the plan was to publish no. 26 this month (October). Unfortunately, very little material have been received so the release of is postponed to December. If TCNEWS should be released on a regular basis and have a quality content, then we need to achieve it together. As Chairman of the Commission I am happy to edit the material, but I am not able to write it up all myself – I need your assistance as a national delegate and I expect you to activate many of the good thematic philatelists you have in your networks.

Material for publication in TCNEWS no. 26 needs to be in my hand by 15 November at the latest.

Best wishes,

 Jonas Hällström
